From Bedroom Videos to Box Office #1 — Meet Kane Parsons, the 20-Year-Old Who Just Rewrote Hollywood’s Rules

Hollywood doesn’t usually come knocking on a teenager’s door. But then again, most teenagers aren’t Kane Parsons. At just 20 years old, this self-taught filmmaker has done what no one his age has ever done before — and even Steven Spielberg stopped to take notice.

Kane Parsons : Overview

Who Is Kane Parsons?

Kane Parsons is officially the youngest filmmaker ever to debut at number one at the US box office — and his journey there is nothing short of a movie script itself.

It all started not in a film school, but in his bedroom. Back in January 2022, as a 16-year-old, Kane used animation software to create a fictional horror web series and uploaded it online. His hyper-realistic aesthetics and impeccable attention to detail went viral, amassing millions of views and building a cult following that quickly grabbed the attention of Hollywood heavyweights.

That’s the kind of origin story that reminds you talent has no minimum age requirement.

The Rise Before Backrooms

Kane didn’t sit still after going viral. Before arriving in the film industry, he dropped a mystery thriller web series called The Oldest View in 2023, followed by People Still Live Here, a digital horror web series, in 2025. He also created other web series like Project 209 and short films including It’s Nicer Here and Transmission Server.

He was essentially building his own cinematic universe — one YouTube upload at a time.

Backrooms — The Film That Changed Everything

Backed by industry giants James Wan and Shawn Levy, Backrooms reinvented the psychological horror genre. The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia — and was made on a modest budget before breaking major box office records.

Following the film’s success, veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg personally lauded Kane’s work — one of the most powerful validations any young filmmaker could receive.

Backrooms is rooted in one of the internet’s most beloved pieces of creepypasta folklore — a liminal horror concept born online that Kane understood better than anyone, having grown up with it.
